to spin a single for a 2 ply sock yarn I am working personally on an 8.5 ratio. I randomly select pieces of roving from the basket to avoid long stripes and splashes of color. I spin in a medium draw method and minimally pre-draft. If the roving merits it I split the foot long piece into smaller strips to help the spinning process. I fill up two bobbins before I start to ply.
